PASSEPARTOUT CONSERVATIVE AND MUSEUM: WHY ARE SO IMPORTANT FOR THE CONSERVATION OF THE ARTWORK?
The art photographs, paintings, prints and more generally all forms of art on paper need to be stored with materials that allow these works to not losing its characteristics over time. The main rule to follow is to avoid contact with materials with high levels of acidity. If a mat acid is applied to a work over the years acids will expand up to the paper underneath and corroding the cellulose fibers, cause dark spots on the work. The next step caused by the acid will be the deterioration of the paper.
We see now the requirements to have our passepartout to keep the works:
– The “Conservation” is acid-free, with alkaline reserve, and complies with ISO 9706. In addition to conservation, is devoid of any kind of optical brighteners and has an anti-fungal treatment. It is recommended for framing and presentation portfolio.
– The “100% cotton” is acid-free and with alkaline reserve. This remarkable product complies with the requirements of the ISO 9706 standard of conservation and those of the photographic activity test (PAT). They are undergoing treatment antifungal and have a natural color tending to ivory. It is highly recommended for the storage of art works.
– The “Museum” is composed of cellulose selected to which is added the calcium carbonate which makes the product free of acid and with alkaline reserve. This board has obtained the following certifications: DIN 6738, ANSI / NISO Z39.48 and ISO 9706 CD.
Recall also that the acidity of the paper can also be caused by air pollution, light, varnishes, inks, glues, but also from contact with other acidic materials.
As regards the mounting mat must take into account that also the cardboard used for the back is in conformity and that any adhesive strips or nooks used to fix the works are free of acids and harmful solvents. For that on our site we provide also the Photo Corners and tape Filmoplast P 90 plus.
If the work will be framed it is also important that the products you use are complies because acids also migrate between different materials such as frame and foam board closing, just as important for conservation is the invisible glass with UV protection. Of these materials we will talk in the next article.
