ALBERT WATSON. Fashion, portraits & landscapes
From April 7 to June 17, 2018 on display in Carpi photographs from the Blumarine archive
The exhibition, curated by Luca Panaro, conceived and produced by the Museums of Palazzo dei Pio, in collaboration with CFS Carpi Fashion System,Blumarine, with the contribution of Fondazione CR Carpi, presents a hundred images that cover about ten years of work by ALBERT WATSON( one of the most important and influential photographers of our time) , between the 1980s and the 1990s, when the Scottish photographer made as many as twelve campaigns for the Carpi-based fashion label.
The title of the exhibition, ‘Fashion, Portrait & Landscape,’ well defines the areas within which his art has developed. Watson, in fact, is universally recognizedu to as one of the masters of fashion photography; with more than 100 Vogue covers and numerous campaigns for the world’s leading fashion houses, Watson has fleshed out the image of elegance in recent decades.
On the other hand, the Scottish photographer is one of the greatest contemporary portraitists; his shots of Keith Richards, Clint Eastwood, Barack Obama, and Steve Jobs, to name but a few, have become true icons. The eye of the portraitist is also well present in the fashion campaigns, where, from Naomi Campbell to a very young Nadja Auermannfino to Cindy Crawford, the photographer represents in his black and white the personalities of women.
Finally, the gaze on the landscape, even the urban one, which is never the background of the campaigns, but characterizes their choices and flavor, becoming in many the protagonist: from Scotland to the New Mexico desert, to London, Los Angeles and Naples.
With this initiative, Albert Watson returns to Carpi, a city with which he has forged a special bond. Here, in fact, he worked by inserting himself in the communication and image choices of the Carpi-based brand Blumarine, with a sophisticated allure. Precisely from the company’s archives come the photographs and books of these campaigns, as well as a video montage of all the images.
The exhibition will have an additional section in the Blumarine space of the City Museum, where some of the looks photographed by Watson are presented.
