“GRAND TOUR” by GIULIANO FERRARI.
New project now available in our gallery!
In European culture, at least since the Renaissance, travel to Italy was a way of approaching knowledge of cultural reference models: the ruins of antiquity, the great Renaissance painting, the landscape.
To travel in order to know, then; and knowledge does not involve simply seeing, but requires the mental commitment to observe critically in order to memorize, stimulates questions about the causes and consequences of things seen, and leads to comparing one’s experiences with new knowledge.
Perhaps, it is precisely because of the awareness of these opportunities that Giuliano Ferrari is now proposing to us a photographic research on the same theme but with an evocative title, because by the 18th century travel to Italy was known by the appellation “Grand Tour ,” the “great journey” because of its importance and because it constituted a prolonged commitment like a course of study and usually lasted a year, or sometimes more.
