Francesca Catellani – European Photography 2018
MEMORIES IN SUPER8
(DAILY LIFE IN EUROPE 1970/1980)
Edited by Francesca Baboni and Stefano Taddei
Our contemporary society has always been characterized by changes and revolutions that have brought positive innovations and changes of social significance.
The project presents a photographic series that is precisely about a kind of silent revolution, a testimony to renewal and transformation that focuses on the changes not only in socio-anthropology and thought, but also in architecture and costume that took place in the crucial decade between 1970 and 1980 in Italy and Europe, from the leaden years of Italian terrorism and economic crisis, but also of the philosophies associated with the revolution of hippie culture, to the rebirth of the 1980s characterized by hedonism, fashion and mass consumption, a true second economic boom.
A series of photographs selected from more than 12,000 shots taken through amateur films shot in Super8, private documentary material that the photographer collected through painstaking research between Italy, its islands and Europe.
Documents from the period that manifest substantial transformations taking place through small excerpts of daily life. In addition to these, the project also includes a series of 40 photographs printed on cotton paper, harking back to the tones and colors of the period to be set up on the walls, and the projection of digitized videos to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period. The author intends to document this historical period by bringing a question to our present time, “What shall we do with the future?”
